When you walk into a toy store, you’re stepping into a world of imagination, discovery, and joy. At Learning Express Glen Ellyn, we believe in creating magical experiences for all kids, including those who thrive with sensory-friendly environments. One of the cornerstones of childhood development is sensory play, and we’re here to share why it’s not just fun—it’s foundational.
What is Sensory Play?
Sensory play involves engaging a child’s senses—sight, touch, smell, sound, and sometimes even taste—to explore and learn. From squishing kinetic sand to listening to soothing rainmaker toys, these activities stimulate brain development, improve fine motor skills, and encourage creativity. Sensory play also helps children regulate emotions, making it a wonderful tool for self-soothing and focus.
Benefits of Sensory Play
- Cognitive Development
Sensory activities build nerve connections in the brain, which supports critical thinking and problem-solving. Simple actions like pouring water or playing with textured slime engage children in ways that help them better understand the world around them. - Motor Skill Improvement
Activities like stacking sensory rings or squeezing squishy balls strengthen both fine and gross motor skills, helping children with everyday tasks like writing and tying their shoes. - Social Skills and Communication
Sensory play can be a shared experience that fosters collaboration and communication. Children learn to express preferences, take turns, and share ideas, all while having fun. - Emotional Regulation
The repetitive, soothing motions in sensory activities can calm overstimulated minds. This is especially beneficial for children with sensory sensitivities or neurodiverse needs.

Fidget Toys: These wildly popular toys are great for tactile stimulation and focus. Plus, they’re portable for on-the-go fun.

Sensory Plushies: Earlier this year, we partnered with a new toy vendor, Meavia Toys, to expand our sensory selection. All of their toys are curated with sensory stimulation in mind. Learn more about them here.
